Rhododendron (elepidote - Large Leaved)
"Big Leaf" rhododendrons. These are what most people first think of when they hear the word rhododendron. “Elepidote” literally means “without scales,” referring to a characteristic of the familiar large leaf rhododendrons. Foliage of this class of rhododendrons, although generally larger in size, can vary from about an inch long as in the species R. proteoides to as much as three feet long in the species R. sinogrande. Some have incredible fuzzy indumentum on the new growth and under the leaves, as on R. yakushimanum. The flowers can be almost any color. This group includes a very large number of hybrids. RHODODENDRON 'Cynosure'
(C8) A medium sized plant, wider than tall, that buds up very well. It blooms in late May and has proven to do well in sun but also sets buds in deep shade. The full pink trusses have a distinctive rust colored flare in the throat of each flower. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Delp's Dream' ('D. D.')
(C8) An attractive plant, with a symmetrical, compact, mounded habit, deep matte green oval leaves with light beige indumentum. Flowers are clear light yellow in full rounded trusses. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Dexter's Apricot'
(C) A compact plant of broad, rounded habit displays trusses of 12-15 large and funnel-shaped flowers with darker edges and yellowish-green basal blotch. The overall effect is apricot-blushed pink. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Dexter's Champagne'
(C8) The name is an apt one; the fragrant flowers are buff with faint highlights of pink, apricot, and yellow. The foliage is moderately glossy and olive green in color. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Dexter's Giant Red'
(C8) The showy buds open to a bright red and fade to dark pink with a red blotch and red spotting. The truss is huge — about 7 inches high with 4 inch flowers — and the leaves are 6 inches long and 2 inches wide. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Dexter's Orange'
(C) Few, if any, truly orange flowered rhododendrons are hardy in the northeast, but this one is a contender. Flowers are actually a darker pink with an orange blotch that gives the truss an overall orange glow. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Dexter's Pink'
(C8) An early mid-season blooming fragrant pink, with a darker edge fading to a lighter center. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Dexter's Purple'
(C8) This little known “Dexter” has rich lilac/violet flowers with a deeper purple flare in the throat, and a well clothed and rounded plant habit with deep green leaves. Growth is restrained. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Dexter's Spice'
(C8) Flower is openly funnel-shaped, frilly, very fragrant, 4 1/2 to 5 inches across, white with pale yellow-green spots in throat of dorsal lobes. Leaves are 5 inches long, glossy and olive green. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Disca'
(C8) This is the reverse cross “little sister” of the heralded 'Cadis'. The fragrant frilled flowers open a pale pink that fades to white. 'Disca' is also a late bloomer (June) and comes into its full glory a week after 'Cadis'. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Dorothy Swift'
(C8) Flowers are held in ball trusses of 12-17, broadly funnel-shaped, with 5 wavy-edged lobes. Flower color is pink in bud, opening to a moderate, light and pale pink fading to white; slightly scented. Leaves dark green. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Dr. Lutton'
(C8) 'Dr Lutton' has flawless deep green convex leaves with a trace of indumentum. A vigorous and sturdy plant with an upright, compact habit. Flowers in late May, white opening from pink buds, and are especially long-lasting. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Dream of Kings'
(C) This is our favorite deep purple. An upright grower, it has outstanding foliage, vigor, and gorgeous purple flowers with a very dark blotch or flare. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Edith Bosley'
(C8) Color is a strong purple in bud, opening deep reddish purple at the margins, shading through strong purple to strong reddish purple in center; with prominent dark red spotting on upper lobe. Plant is bushy and compact; foliage is a dark matte green. more info

(C8) This plant should thrive in any frigid climate. The late blooming flowers are pink with a small white blotch in a large truss. more info
